Reliable industry insider Tom Henderson claims that the upcoming Battlefield 2042 was originally planned to be a battle royale game.
Before returning to the franchises traditional roots, the game started life as a battle royale. Faithful fans of the shooter game will tell you how excited they were when they found out Battlefield 2042 was returning to it’s roots. While some are celebrating, others are complaining about the games lack of single player campaign.
Since the release of the public beta over the weekend, a lot of fans have expressed concern about the upcoming release, the beta was filled with bugs that have left fans worrying about another rocky AAA game launch. Reports that the games beta build is barely a month old have added to the concern.
Many people have been accusing the gameplay of being built with battle royale in mind, and industry insider Tom Henderson (via GamingBolt) has come out to say these accusations may be correct. “the theory that Battlefield 2042 started as a Battle Royale is true;” Tom says. Although he offers no explanation as to why it switch from a battle royale game to the game we played only a few short days ago in the beta.
He goes on to say that Call of Duty: Warzone may have had an influence on Battlefields development, but the main influence comes from EA’s own Apex Legends, another well loved battle royale game.

This may not come as a surprise to many, after Battlefield V’s failed attempt with Firestorm, DICE may be looking to try again with another version of the popular BR mode. As of now though, the multiplayer will not come with such an option.
EA aren’t done with Battlefield 2042 announcements though, later this week we will see them announce more details on the Hazard Zone mode, a squad based game type that has a “distinctly Battlefield” feel to it.
Battlefield launched in just over a month on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and PC.
