Back in the days of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, destructible environments were a rare sight, very few development companies were able to make it work on the limited hardware that these consoles had. Battlefield was one of the first games to introduce destruction into games and they managed to pull it off incredibly well.
Battlefield 2042 and Call of Duty: Vanguard are only a short time away from release, and even Vanguard is rumoured to feature some destructible environments. The gameplay mechanic could be making a comeback, and it could even be coming to Grand Theft Auto 6.
A job listing has come to light for an upcoming title from Rockstar Games North which has garnered the attention of Grand Theft Auto fans everywhere. The job listing is searching for somebody who can help design soundscapes, but one line in the listing is even more interesting.
The listing reads “we help to bring extra life to the environment, characters, weapons, vehicles, and more. The visual effects help to immerse the player in a believable world, from using ambient effects for things like insects around the player and rain dripping off buildings up to large-scale destruction events like skyscrapers crashing to the ground.”
As interesting as that sounds, there’s always the possibility that this is a scripted set-piece for a mission, but it could also be that destructible buildings are coming to Grand Theft Auto 6. We don’t know what to actually expect from GTA 6 until we get some actual news from Rockstar, but who knows when that will be.
